★What's new
The latest changes, newest first. Tap a topic to read how it works.
New: playing time, live scores, seasons, a printable playbook, the practice planner, the Sunday email, clubs and schools
- Playing time on the stats link, and each player's minutes in the box score.
- A live score link for the families who can't make it.
- That's you: a player's own link marks her in the play.
- Print the playbook as a booklet or a PDF.
- A Seasons tab: file the season away, start the next one empty, open past seasons, and download everything.
- ✨ Plan it for me in the practice plan editor, and a drill library with cones on the field for every sport.
- The Sunday email for families: the week ahead.
- Clubs and schools: a club is one sport, a school is every sport; both open up once their plan is on.
- The Free plan is the board and 3 saved plays; everything else stays in view and needs a pass. The board itself needs a free account now.
Playing time on the stats link coach
- On the stats link (Games → Stats link), the keeper taps Playing time at the top.
- Start the clock at the whistle, Pause at halftime. Tap a player when she goes on and again when she comes off; tapping a player on starts the clock too.
- Minutes count only while the clock runs. The coaches see every player's minutes (and share of the game) in the game's Box score, so playing time is fair and nobody has to guess.
A live score link for families coach
Games → the game → Live score link, then Copy live score link. Anyone with the link sees the score, the scoring plays by name and the game clock as the keeper taps, refreshed every 15 seconds. No account, nothing to install. Live link off turns it off.
That's you: a player sees herself in the play player
When a player opens a play from her own page (the parent page's private player link, or her own account), the player with her number gets a yellow ring and a YOU tag, and the play says That's you: #7. Only when a player in the play wears her number.
Print the playbook coach
- On the board, Open… → Print the playbook (PDF booklet)… under Team playbook.
- Tick the folders, choose whether the coaches' notes go in, then Print or save as PDF (the print window saves a PDF on every phone and laptop) or Open it as a page.
- One play per page: the steps drawn side by side, the captions, and the notes under their step. A cover lists every play by folder.
Start a new season, and past seasons coach
- Dashboard → Season → Seasons. The top box shows this season at a glance.
- Start a new season: name it (Fall 2026 is suggested), tick the graduated players to take off the roster (and their family accounts if you want), then tap Start the new season twice.
- The season is filed away: the record, every box score and the minutes, the schedule and attendance, tournaments, assessments, goals, quiz results, questions, volunteer lists and RSVPs. The dashboard starts the new season empty. The roster, playbook, coaches, families, scouting, practice plans, resources and the chat stay.
- Past seasons lists each one: Open shows the games, every player's totals and who graduated; Download this season saves it as a file. Only the head coach can start a new season or delete a past one.
Download everything coach
Seasons → Download everything: Everything (JSON) is one file with the team, coaches, roster, playbook, games and stats, schedule, past seasons and the chat. Roster, Games and scores, Season stats and Schedule come as CSV files for a spreadsheet. Your data is yours; keep a copy wherever you like.
Plan a practice with AI, and the drill library coach
- Dashboard → Coaching → Practice → New practice plan. Set the minutes, type what to work on (optional) and press ✨ Plan it for me: the AI builds the practice from your sport's drills, your playbook and what recent games showed, and you change anything you like before saving. It counts toward the daily AI limit like a draft, on Team Pro.
- On the board, Open… has a Drills (cones on the field) group for every sport: rondos, layup lines, star drills, slaloms, 1v1 channels and more, with cones, routes and coaching points on each step. Open one, change it, save it as yours.
The Sunday email for families parent
Sunday afternoons, teams on a plan send each parent and player with an account one email with the week ahead: practices, games and other dates with times and places, which games still need their yes or no, and open volunteer spots. Nothing on this week? No email. The Tomorrow reminders switch under Which emails you get turns it off too. Coaches get Monday's email instead.
The funnel on the admin page admin
Admin → Funnel: coaches by the week they signed up (the last 12 weeks), and how many of each group made a team, saved a play, kept game stats, had families join and paid. The example team and family accounts don't count.
Terms, privacy and refunds pages; delete your account; a welcome email everyone
- Three plain-language pages: Terms, Privacy Policy and Refund Policy, linked from the home page and every sign-up. They say exactly how Chalk Talk works: who sees what, how players under 13 are protected, and how refunds work.
- Delete your account any time: coaches under the team button → You, parents and players at the bottom of their page. A head coach with other coaches on the team makes one of them head coach first, or deletes the team. A parent's players go with the parent, unless another parent shares them.
- A welcome email arrives within the hour after a new account is confirmed, with the three-step setup for coaches and the app for families.
Every sport: soccer, basketball, football, baseball and more coaches
Chalk Talk now works for any sport on a field, court or rink: girls' and boys' lacrosse (kept separate, since they're different games), soccer, basketball, volleyball, field hockey, football, flag football, baseball, softball, ice hockey, rugby and ultimate, plus "other field sport" and "other court sport" for anything else.
- Pick the sport when you make the team (or change it later under the team button → Coaches → Team settings). Everything follows it: the board's field, the Open menu, the stats parents tap at games, the box score, the dashboard cards and leaders, the lineup, the AI recap and the AI play drawer.
- The board draws each sport's field to its rulebook lines (soccer's penalty areas, the key and 3-point line, blue lines, a diamond), and a new play starts with the right players in place: a 4-4-2, five on five, a volleyball rotation, nine in the field. Lacrosse keeps its situations, formations and worked examples.
- The views are named for the sport (Box, Half court, Red zone, Zone, Infield), and the far-end view is left out where a field has only one end, like a diamond.
- One sport at a time. The Field section lists only your sport's sizes (full size, 9 v 9, youth and so on), so nothing is cluttered with fields you don't use. A team's sport is set in Team settings; with no team, the Change sport… button under Field (or at the bottom of the Open menu) picks it. Plays made before keep their own field.
Look around an example team first coach
Want to see the dashboard full before you type anything? Make an example team: on the dashboard's Set up your team page pick your sport and press Show me with an example team, or on the board's Make-a-team dialog press Just looking?, or under the team button → You → Look around an example team.
- What's in it: a roster with your sport's positions, practices and games on the calendar, a game played last week with stats and a score, a tournament, scouting on an opponent, team goals, a link, a team chat, and three of the sport's worked examples in the playbook.
- None of it is real, and it says so at the top of the dashboard. When you've seen enough, press Clear the example team there, then Set up my own team. One per coach: asking again opens the same one.
Worked examples and situations for your sport coach
Every sport has a few plays to learn the board from and a few situations to start from, under Open… → Examples and Start from a situation: a horns pick-and-roll and a press break, a corner kick and a build-out, a power play and a breakout, bunt coverage and cutoffs, a lineout, a vertical stack, and more. Each has captions, most have a quiz step (where does this player go?) and a rules question. Open one, press play, then change it or save it to your team.
One sport at a time. The Field section lists only your sport's sizes. A team's sport is set in Team settings; with no team, Change sport… under Field (or at the bottom of the Open menu) picks it.
Add the whole season from a link or an email coach
- Dashboard → Games → Add the season from a link or an email. Paste the league's schedule page link, or paste the text of the schedule email (anything with dates works, even "practice every Tuesday and Thursday at 5"). Press Read it.
- Check the list: date, time, what and where. Untick anything that isn't yours; rows already on your schedule start unticked.
- Press Add the ticked rows. Games go under Games with their time and field; practices and other dates go on the Calendar.
Part of Team Pro, like the tournament reader, and each read counts toward the 25 AI uses a day. If a page says "nothing to read", it fills its schedule in after it loads: copy the schedule from your browser and paste it instead.
Invite your assistant coaches coach
Dashboard → Settings → Plan → Invite your assistant coaches: copy the link (or the QR code) and send it. A coach who opens it makes a free account and lands on your team as a coach, with everything your plan has. There is nothing for them to pay: the team's plan covers everyone on it. A coach who wants a team of their own makes one, with its own plan.
The Monday email coach
Monday mornings, teams on a plan get one email per coach with what needs them: players waiting for approval, stats from families to confirm, questions and chat messages from families, this week's games and practices, and who's going to the next game. Nothing waiting and nothing on this week? No email. The Tomorrow reminders switch under Which emails you get turns it off too.
Carpools, and an AI game recap everyone
- Carpool. In the team app, each game's page has a 🚗 Carpool section, and each tournament card on the Schedule has a 🚗 Carpool button. Tap I can drive to offer seats (how many, when you leave, from where); the team chat says you can drive. Families tap Put Dee in to take a seat, or Dee needs a ride. The driver gets a private message each time someone joins, and the people in one car can write to each other privately to sort out pickup. If a driver cancels, the riders go back on the needs-a-ride list and their families get a message. Coaches see "2 cars · 5 open seats · 1 needs a ride" on each game and tournament on the dashboard.
- Game recap. On the dashboard, Games → ✨ Recap on a game with a score. Press Write the recap: it's written from the box score (the score, who scored, saves, the game's focus, the next game) and nothing else. Untick Name players to keep names out, or tick Use my coaching notes to shape the tone. Read it, change anything, then Post to the team chat or Use it in an email.
Photos and polls in the chat, the lineup, practice reminders, and nudging families everyone
- Photos. In the app's chat, tap + then Photo (type a caption first and it goes with it). On the dashboard, 📷 Photo under the message box. The picture is made smaller on the phone before it's sent. Tap a photo to see it full screen. More → Team photos shows every picture from the chats you're in; coaches can delete old ones there (the team keeps up to 300).
- Polls. + → Poll in the app, or 📊 Poll on the dashboard: a question and 2 to 6 choices, and whether people can pick more than one. Tap a choice to vote, tap it again to take it back. Who shows the names. The person who asked, or a coach, can close it.
- Edit. Tap your own message, then Edit, to fix a typo. It says "edited".
- The lineup. Dashboard → Games → Lineup on a game. Pick Attack, Midfield, Defense or Goalie for each starter (or Fill in from positions), add a note for families, then Save and share with the team. Families see it on the game's page in the app, and the team chat says it's up. Until you share it, only coaches see it.
- Practice reminders. Phones with alerts on get "Practice in an hour" with the time and place, the same way they get "game day".
- Nudge the rest. Next to Going / Can't on a game or event, Nudge the rest (dashboard) or Nudge (app) sends each family who hasn't answered a private message, so their phone buzzes. Once every 6 hours per game.
Reactions, who saw it, pinned at the top, the score in the chat, and a calendar that follows the schedule everyone
- Reactions. Tap a message in the app (or hover one on the dashboard) and tap 👍 ❤️ 👏: a quick "got it" without another message. Tap your own reaction to take it back.
- Seen by. On the coach's own messages in the team chat, coaches see "Seen by 8 of 20": how many people on the team have read that far. Families don't see it.
- Pinned at the top. A message the coach pins stays at the top of the team chat in the app; tap it to see every pinned message.
- Post the score. After a game, the coach presses Post the score (dashboard Games tab, or the game in the app) and "Final: Us 8, Them 5" goes to the team chat.
- A calendar that follows the schedule. In the app, Schedule → Add to my calendar → Subscribe (or Subscribe in my calendar app on the team link). The phone's calendar then updates itself: games with times and fields, practices, tournaments. Coaches: the dashboard's Calendar tab has Copy the calendar families subscribe to. It needs the calendar function from the setup checklist.
Volunteer lists for a tournament or game, reused next time coaches, team parents
In Volunteers, tie an item to a tournament or a game under For: the date fills in and follows the event if it moves. For the next tournament, Reuse an earlier list copies every item with the names cleared and the dates moved to the new dates. Each tournament box has a Volunteer sign-ups button that opens the list ready for it. How it works.
The board, faster
Describe a play in words and the AI draws it; start from a game situation (draw, clear, ride, man up, man down…); Flip a play to the other side; Insert a step before; the Group tool moves several players at once; speak captions instead of typing. See Describe it in words and Flip, Insert before, Group, Speak it.
The team app: chat, live stats, Going / Can't, alerts
Parents, players and coaches get one app on the phone: the schedule with Going / Can't on every game and practice, the group chat (plus private chats), live stats from an hour before each game, directions, the coach's links and files, and phone alerts for new messages and game day. It works with no signal. See The team app on your phone.
Players match the roster by themselves
When a parent adds their player, the player is matched to the roster by number or name; approving a player nobody matches adds them to the roster; the Roster column under Players on the team changes a match any time.
1Getting started
Make an account, make your team, and bring your co-coaches in.
Make your coach account
- Go to teamchalktalk.com and press Make a free account.
- Type your name, email and a password (8 or more characters), then press Make my account.
- The board opens and asks for your sport and your team's name. Pick the sport, type the name (for example 2030 Girls) and press Make the team.
- You get a join code for your team. Keep it: co-coaches use it to join.
New teams get a free week of Team Pro, with everything on. After it, the team keeps the board and 3 saved plays for free; every other feature stays in view but needs a pass.
Pick your sport
Every team has a sport, picked when the team is made and changed any time under the team button → Coaches → Team settings (head coach). It sets the board's field and starting players, the Open menu, the position groups on the roster, the stats parents tap at games, the box score and dashboard, the lineup spots and what the AI draws and writes.
- Lacrosse is two choices, Girls' / women's and Boys' / men's: different fields, rules and stats.
- Field sports: soccer (full size, 9 v 9 and 7 v 7), field hockey, football, flag football, rugby, ultimate, or Other Field Sport.
- Court and rink: basketball, volleyball, ice hockey, or Other Court Sport.
- Diamond: baseball and softball, with home plate at the bottom of the board.
Plays already in the playbook keep the field they were drawn on, so changing the sport never moves anyone.
Add your co-coaches
- Give your co-coach the team's join code (on the board: the team button, then Coaches; on the dashboard: the Coaches tab).
- They make their own account, choose Join a team and type the code.
- They see the team's playbook, dashboard and messages right away. As head coach you can make someone else head coach, or take a coach off, under Coaches.
Put Chalk Talk on your phone's home screen
- iPhone: open the site in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen.
- Android: open it in Chrome, tap the ⋮ menu, then Install app (or Add to Home screen).
- Open it from the new icon. It opens full screen, and the board, dashboard and stats pages still open on a sideline with no signal.
What's free, and what a pass turns on coach
The board needs a free coach account: press Open the board on the home page, make the account, and you're drawing. Free is the board with every sport's examples and drills, and 3 saved plays. Everything else (player links, the stats link, calendar, chat, families, practice plans and the rest) stays in view on the dashboard and asks for a pass when you use it. A new team gets every feature free for 7 days; then Team or Team Pro by the season or the year, or a club or school plan. Player and team links never need an account.
2The board
Draw a play on a field to scale, step by step, and watch it move.
Describe it in words, the AI draws it coach
- On the board, Open… → ✨ Describe it in words, AI draws it… (signed in to your team, Team Pro).
- Type the set, who's where with your numbers, and what happens in order: "2-3-2. 7 sets a pick for 4 on the right wing. 4 drives to the 8, draws the slide and feeds 1 on the crease." Press Draw it.
- You get a play with a step per move and a caption on each. Move anyone who's off, then Save. It uses the same daily AI allowance as the writer and the photo reader.
Start from a situation (women's lacrosse), or a blank for your sport
For every sport, Open… → Start new gives you a blank play with the right players in place (a 4-4-2, five on five, nine in the field) and an empty field for drills. For girls' and women's lacrosse, Open… → Start from a situation adds: the draw, a clear after a save, riding their clear, an 8 m free position, man up (7 v 6), man down (6 v 7), a settled 3-3, a zone defense, and transition. The right people are on the field in the right spots; you add the moves. When you save, the folder is already picked (Draws, Clears and rides, Man up/man down, Free positions…), and the playbook's chips filter by it.
Flip, Insert before, Group, Speak it
- Flip ↔ (under the steps) mirrors the whole play to the other side of the field: the same play from the other wing in one tap. Undo puts it back.
- Insert before puts a copy of this step in front of it, for the setup step you forgot.
- Group (the dashed box in the Draw tools, or G): drag a box around several players, then drag any of them and they all move together. Escape or another tool lets them go.
- 🎤 Speak it under the caption box: say the caption instead of typing it (phones, Chrome and Safari). Tap again to stop.
- The faint copies of the players are where they stood on the step before, so you can see every cut; turn them off under Settings if you don't want them.
Draw your first play
- Open the board (Open the board, or /app). Name the play in the box at the top.
- From Add on the left, drag players from either team (and a Goalie, in sports that have one) onto the field (or tap one, then tap where they go). Double-click a player to type their name or number.
- That's step 1, the setup. Press + Next step, then drag players to where they go next. Arrows appear for every move.
- Keep adding steps. Press ▶ to watch the whole play move.
- Press Save. Signed in, it goes to your team's playbook; you can also keep it in My plays on that device.
Keys on a computer: V move, R run, P pass, D dodge, K pick, T text, Z zone, Space play, Ctrl+S save.
Step, Field, Share, Quiz and Help tabs
The settings beside the field are in tabs, so the page stays one screen tall. The board remembers the last tab you used.
- Step: the step's name, what players should see (the caption), a video clip link, who has the ball, and how long the move takes. Your coach notes for the step are here too.
- Field: field size and level (full field, youth sizes, 7v7), the view for each step (one end, the whole field, the other end), arrows, player size and team colors.
- Share: the player link, what players see, and downloads: a video, a picture of the step, a step sheet, or the play file.
- Quiz: turn a step into a “Where do you go?” question for players.
- Help: how the board works, and the tour.
Tap a player or arrow and its settings appear at the top of whichever tab is open.
Bend, delete and tidy arrows
- Drag the middle of any arrow to bend it. Tap the bend to switch between a curve (round dot) and a sharp cut (diamond).
- Don't need an arrow? Tap it and press Delete arrow. The player still moves; the arrow just isn't drawn.
- Pass the ball by dragging it onto a player, or under Who has the ball on the Step tab.
Turn a photo of a whiteboard into a play
- Draw the play on a whiteboard or paper (the field's own lines, like the arc or the key, help the reader find the scale), and take a clear photo from above.
- On the board, open Open… and choose From a photo…, then pick the photo.
- Chalk Talk's AI reads the circles, X's and arrows and draws it as a new play: players where they were, and a step for each set of arrows.
- Check it and fix anything it got wrong (drag players, delete arrows), then Save.
It's a starting point, not perfect. Dark marker on a clean board works best. Team Pro, and it counts toward the AI's daily limit.
4The team dashboard
Games, stats, calendar, tournaments, messages and the roster, at /team.
Add and edit your roster
- Open the Roster tab. Type a number, a first name and a position, then press Add player (or import a list from a spreadsheet).
- To change a player, press Edit on their row: number, first name, position or graduation class. Press Save.
Practices and the calendar (and editing them)
- Open Calendar. Pick the date, the time and where, and choose Repeat: weekly with an end date for a season of practices.
- Press Add to calendar. Families see it on their pages, and get a reminder email the day before.
- To change one, press Edit on it in the list. Choose Save this one, or Save this and the later ones to move the rest of the series (each keeps its own day).
- Cancelled for the rest of the season? Edit, then Delete this and later.
Games and season stats
- Open Games and add a game: opponent, date, where.
- Enter stats yourself, or send a Stats link to a parent (see Game day). The score and each player's stats fill in as taps come in.
- Season stats adds it all up per player; Goalies shows the shot chart.
Tournaments from the schedule link
- Open Tournaments, add the tournament (name, dates, where), and open Get the games from the tournament's schedule.
- Paste the link to the tournament's schedule page. If the schedule calls your team something else (like Lady Hawks 2030), type that name too.
- Press Get the games. The AI finds your team and fills in each game with its time and field.
- Leave Check for changes automatically on. Chalk Talk checks once a day, and every 2 hours during the tournament. When a time, field or opponent changes, it updates the games and alerts your coaches, players and parents by email and phone alert.
Works with TourneyMachine and Exposure Events links (paste the link to your team's page if there is one). If a page won't read, copy the schedule from it and use Or paste the schedule here. Games that already have stats are never deleted.
What families see on the team link
- Next game at the top: opponent, day, time, field, a Directions button, and the tournament's details for families (what you typed under Details, like arrival time and jersey color).
- During a game, the score shows LIVE and updates by itself as the stats link comes in.
- Families: join the team buttons (with QR codes) for parents and for players 13 and older. Turn them off on the Player accounts tab if you'd rather send those links yourself; you approve everyone either way.
Add your team or club logo
- Team: on the dashboard, open Coaches and press Upload a logo under Team logo. Club: on /club, under Club logo.
- Pick the picture. A PNG with a see-through background looks best; Chalk Talk shrinks it for you.
- It shows on your dashboard, on the team link, and at the top of every email Chalk Talk sends to your team. Teams without their own logo use the club's.
Email families from Chalk Talk (with your logo)
- Open Messages, scroll to Email the team, and pick who it goes to.
- Type a subject and your email, or a few notes and press ✨ Weekly update: it writes the week's family email from your notes and the calendar, with a short recap, thanks, and each reminder under its own heading (dates, times, places and links on their own lines).
- Read it over, then press Send from Chalk Talk. It goes out right away with your logo at the top and your name as the sender. Replies come to your own email.
Start a line with a heading and a colon, like HALLOWEEN PRACTICE: or DATE:, and it shows in bold in the email.
Volunteer sign-ups (snacks, carpools, stats)
- On the dashboard, open Volunteers. Type what you need help with (like Snacks or Carpool to Lax Fest), the date, and how many people.
- Under For, pick the tournament or game it's for (or leave it Anytime). The date fills in from the event and moves with it if the event moves. On a tournament's box in Tournaments, the Volunteer sign-ups button opens the list with that tournament already picked.
- Press Add. It shows in the team app under Volunteer sign-ups and on the team link under Volunteer, grouped by what it's for.
- Same list as last time? Open Reuse an earlier list, pick the old tournament or game and the new one, and press Copy the list. Every item comes over (what, details, how many) with nobody signed up, and the dates land on the new event: day two stays day two.
- Families tap Sign up and type their name. On that phone they can Take back my sign-up. When it's full, it says so.
- Want a parent to run it? Under Team parents, tick their name. They set up sign-ups from their parents' page.
Anyone with the team link sees the names, so families only type a name. You or a team parent can take someone off with the ×.
Messages and emails to the team
Messages works like the chat in the team app. On the left: Team chat (coaches, players with accounts and parents all see it), Coaches only, and one line per private conversation, each with a count of new messages. Parents and players can only write in the team chat, so that's where their questions land; the Overview's Needs you card says when one is waiting and opens it. Under any message: Reply answers in the same chat, Reply privately opens a private chat with that person, Pin as announcement puts a team message on the team link and players' pages. + New private message starts a private chat with one person or a few. Tap 👍 ❤️ 👏 under a message to react; your own team-chat messages show Seen by 8 of 20, how many have read that far. Email the team below writes one email to families; the ✨ button drafts it in your voice with AI.
5Game day
Stats and the goalie's shot chart from phones on the sideline.
Let a parent keep stats
- On Games, open the game and press Stats link.
- Text it to the parent keeping stats, or show the QR code for them to scan. No account needed.
- They tap a player's button when it happens: goal, assist, shot, ground ball, draw control and more. Undo takes a tap back.
- No signal? Taps wait on their phone and send when it's back.
Goalie shots: tap the spot, then Save or Goal
- On the game, press Copy goalie link and send it to whoever is watching the goalie (or open the stats link and tap Goalie shots).
- Check who's in goal at the top.
- For each shot, tap where it went on the goal, then tap the green Save or red Goal.
- Green dots (saves) and red dots (goals) build up on the goal, with saves, goals and save % above it. Goals count on the scoreboard.
“Where it came from” is optional; open it before tapping Save or Goal if you want it on the chart.
Confirm stats families entered
Parents and players with their own sign-in can enter a player's stats. They wait under Stats players and parents entered on the Games tab until a coach checks them and presses Confirm (or Throw out).
6Families: parents and players
Opt-in accounts, built for young players: parents decide.
The team app on your phone parent player
- Once the coach approves your player, open teamchalktalk.com/hub on your phone and sign in (the same email and password as your parent or player account).
- Put it on your home screen. iPhone: in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. Android: tap Install, or Add to Home screen in Chrome's menu. Open it from the new icon and sign in once more (the home screen app keeps its own sign-in).
- Four tabs at the bottom: Schedule (practices, games, tournaments, and results), Chat, Games (live stats) and More (the team's plays, your players, phone alerts, this guide).
- On more than one team? Tap the team name at the top to switch.
Team chat everyone
- Team chat is the group chat for everyone on the team: coaches, players with accounts, and parents. New messages show up by themselves, and the Chat tab shows how many you haven't read.
- Press + Private to write privately. Parents and players can write to one coach or a few; coaches can write to anyone on the team. Only the people in a private chat see it.
- Coaches also get a Coaches chat that only the staff sees. Coaches can pin a message (tap it, then Pin) or delete one; everyone can delete their own.
Live stats at games everyone
- Each game goes live on the Games tab an hour before it starts (the time on the schedule), so whoever keeps stats can get set up. A game with no time is live all day.
- Tap the game to see the score, the team's stats and the latest plays, updating every few seconds, and Directions to the field. Coaches also see the families' taps waiting to be confirmed, with Confirm all.
- Parents and players get buttons for their own player's stats. They count once a coach confirms them.
- If the coach turned on Let parents keep the team's stats, there's also Open the stats screen: every player's buttons, the other team's goals and the goalie's shots, counted right away.
Going or not parent coach
- In the team app's Schedule, every game and practice has Going, Can't and Maybe. A parent answers for their player (one row per player if you have more than one); a player with their own sign-in answers for themselves. Tap again to take it back.
- Coaches see the counts under each game on the dashboard's Games tab and Calendar, and in the app; press Who for the names and who hasn't answered.
Phone alerts for the chat and game day everyone
The chat asks once to turn alerts on (Turn on at the top of Chat; later under More → Turn on phone alerts). On an iPhone, add the app to the Home Screen first. Alerts go to the account signed in on that phone, so if you sign in as someone else there, they follow the new account. With them on, a new message in a chat you're in pops up on your phone, and an hour before each game you get "game day" with the time and the field. Tapping an alert opens the chat or the game. Alerts don't go to whoever wrote the message, and nothing is sent for messages older than the app's last check (every minute). The coach's site needs the alert keys and the every-minute job set up (the setup checklist).
Links and files coach
- On the dashboard's Overview, under Links and files, add a name, the link (https://…) and a note: the league site, a uniform order form, the field map, the photo album, a Google Drive folder.
- Everyone on the team sees them in the app under More. Only people signed in on the team can see them.
Volunteer sign-ups in the app everyone
- In the team app, More → Volunteer sign-ups. When spots are open, the Schedule shows a yellow card ("3 spots still open") that goes straight there.
- Coaches and team parents build the list right there: what the team needs (snacks, a carpool, keeping stats, the tent), a date, and how many people. Everyone else sees the list and taps Sign me up: it's under your own name, and Take back my sign-up undoes it.
- The same list is on the team link for families without accounts, and under Volunteers on the dashboard.
No signal at the field everyone
Open the team app once with signal (at home is fine). After that it opens with no signal and shows the schedule and chat as of the last time it had signal. Messages and stat taps you make with no signal wait on your phone, with a yellow bar saying how many, and send by themselves when the signal is back, each one once. Closing the app doesn't lose them. Sign out deletes what's saved on the phone.
Let parents keep stats from the app coach
- On the dashboard's Games tab, under Add a game, tick Let parents keep the team's stats in the team app (or in the team app: More).
- Then you don't have to send a stats link: from an hour before each game until it's over, any parent or player on the team can open the stats screen from the app. You can still send a stats link to anyone else.
- Coaches can always open the stats screen from the app, for any game.
Invite parents coach
- On the Player accounts tab, press Make the parent link, and send it to parents (or show its QR code at a team meeting).
- A parent makes an account, agrees for their player, and adds them with a first name and number.
- The player is matched to your roster by number (or first name) automatically. You press Approve; if nobody like them is on the roster yet, they're added to it. Under Players on the team, the Roster column lets you change a match any time.
What parents see and do parent
- At /parent: the player's private link (plays and quizzes on their device), quiz results and their season.
- Game day: pick the game and tap your player's stats as they happen. They count once a coach confirms them.
- Ask the coach: ask what your player should work on, or how they're doing. The coach's answer shows up here.
- Team messages, the calendar, and Turn on phone alerts for schedule changes. On a phone, the team app puts the schedule, the team chat and live stats in one place.
Add the other parent parent
- On /parent, under Parents, press Invite the other parent. You get a one-time code.
- The other parent makes a parent account at /parent and types it under Have a code from the other parent?.
- Both of you see the same things and can enter their stats. Up to 3 parents per player. Only the parent who added the player can delete the profile.
A player's own sign-in, under 13 parent
- On /parent, under Their own sign-in, choose a username and password (no email needed) and press Make the sign-in.
- They sign in at /me with the username and see their plays, quizzes, season and the coach's answers.
- Tick Let their sign-in do what a parent can to let them enter their own stats and ask the coach too.
- Change the password or delete the sign-in there any time; the profile stays.
Players 13 and older player
Coaches send the Player sign-up link from the Player accounts tab. A player 13 or older makes their own account with it and has the same tools as a parent: their stats on game day, ask the coach, messages, goals and a practice log. Coaches approve them first.
Answer families' questions coach
Questions show under Questions from families on the Player accounts tab (a dot on the tab means one is waiting). Type an answer and press Send answer. Only that player's coaches, parents and the player see it.
7Clubs: many teams
For a club or program with a team for each class.
Make your club or school and its teams director
- When you make your account, pick A club (one sport) or A school (every sport). You land on /club: name it (a club also picks its sport) and press Make it. You're its director and you get a code.
- The club or school is locked until its plan is on: buy it there (6-team minimum, per team per year). See an example club shows what the page looks like meanwhile.
- Then make each team there (Make a team, with its graduation class and, for a school, its sport), or have each head coach type the code on their dashboard's Plan tab and approve them. A club only takes teams of its sport.
- A school groups its teams by sport, a club by graduation class. Directors open any team's dashboard from their own dashboard's team menu. Other directors join with the same code on /club. Give each team's coaches their team code; they see only their own team.
What directors see
- /club shows every team by class: coaches, players, games, record, attendance and when it was last active.
- Press Open dashboard on a team to see everything in it: games, stats, calendar, roster, messages and plays. Your dashboard's team menu lists the club's teams too.
- Each team's coaches see only their own team. When a team leaves the club, your access to it ends.
The club plan
One plan covers every team in the club with Team Pro, priced per team (cheaper as the club grows, 6-team minimum). Buy it on /club. Teams in the club pay nothing.
8Plans and payments
One-time passes, not subscriptions.
Pick a plan
- Open the dashboard's Plan tab. Choose Team or Team Pro, for a season (4 months) or a year.
- Splitting it with co-coaches? Choose Split it: each pays a share, and the team keeps everything for 14 days while the rest comes in.
- Pay with Stripe. The plan shows its start and end dates, and your receipts.
Cancel and get a refund for unused months
On the Plan tab, press Cancel. You get back the whole months you haven't used, the plan ends, and the team goes back to Free with nothing deleted.
9Alerts, emails and privacy
What Chalk Talk sends, and what it keeps.
Turn on phone alerts
- Sign in, then press Turn on phone alerts at the top of the dashboard, parent page or player page.
- Allow notifications when your phone asks.
- You'll get an alert when a tournament's schedule changes. Press it again to turn alerts off on that phone.
On an iPhone, add Chalk Talk to your Home Screen first and open it from there (iOS 16.4 or later).
Which emails you get
Reminders the day before practices and games, tournament schedule changes, and answers to your help requests. Coaches also get plan notes. Every email has a link to turn them off, and the Help page has the same switches.
Delete your account everyone
Coaches: the team button → You → Delete my account (tap it twice). A team only you are on goes with you; if other coaches or families are on a team you're the only head coach of, make another coach head coach too (Coaches tab → Make head coach too) or delete the team first. Parents and players 13 and up: Delete my account at the bottom of your page. A parent's players and the under-13 sign-ins they made go too, unless another parent shares the player, who then keeps them. Everything kept about you is deleted right away; backups roll off within 30 days.
What's kept about players
Player links ask for nothing and store nothing. For players a parent added: a first name, a number, quiz results, stats and questions to the coach, seen only by their coaches, their parents and the player. Under 13, a player has a sign-in only if a parent makes one. A parent can delete everything at /parent any time. Chalk Talk's own admin can't see your plays or your players' names.
10Getting help
Ask a question or suggest an idea
